Scale of the Universe: Structures & Vocabulary

Astronomy spans an enormous hierarchy of physical scales: planets orbit stars, stars inhabit galaxies, galaxies gather into groups and clusters, and those systems trace filaments and voids in the cosmic web. Scale reasoning helps prevent category errors such as treating the distance between planets as comparable to the distance between stars or assuming a galaxy photograph shows an object only slightly larger than a star system.
