Atmospheric Seeing & Light Pollution: Foundations

Ground-based astronomy is limited by both atmospheric turbulence and artificial sky brightness. Observatories are placed at high, dry, stable, dark locations; adaptive optics can correct some seeing effects; filters and careful lighting design can reduce specific forms of light pollution but cannot recreate a truly dark sky in every wavelength.
