Overview
Advanced view of Kuiper Belt Objects
The Kuiper belt is a broad population of icy bodies beyond Neptune whose members preserve material from the cold outer protoplanetary disk. It includes Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, many smaller objects, and resonant populations whose orbits record Neptune's gravitational influence and migration.
Kuiper-belt objects constrain giant-planet migration, outer-disk chemistry, collisional evolution, and the origin of short-period comets. Their diversity also shows that dwarf planets and small icy worlds occupy a continuum rather than a single simple category.
