Overview
The larger system around Celestial Sphere & Coordinate Systems
The celestial sphere is a geometric model that treats the sky as if objects were projected onto a vast sphere surrounding the observer. The stars are not actually attached to a sphere, but the model provides a practical two-dimensional framework for describing direction on the sky.
Coordinate systems let observers translate a catalog position into a direction that a telescope mount can track. They also separate true celestial coordinates from the continuously changing local sky position of the same object.

Long-exposure star trails circle the celestial poles, while repeated positional measurements show predictable daily and annual motions.
