Why the Universe Has Structure: Gravity, Dark Matter, and Expansion
A source-linked chapter designed to teach the subject itself, not a generic lesson template.

The sequence below comes from this topic's published material. Sections expand or contract with the subject instead of forcing every lesson into the same five-step mold.
Learning objectives
From a list of structures to a physical explanation
This lesson asks a deeper question than “what is a galaxy cluster?” It asks why the universe develops a hierarchy at all. By the end, you should be able to connect four ideas—gravity, initial density differences, dark matter, and cosmic expansion—to the formation of galaxies, groups, clusters, filaments, and voids.
You should also be able to explain why gravity and expansion are not contradictory. Gravity can gather matter into bound systems while the universe simultaneously expands on much larger scales. Finally, you should be able to distinguish dark matter from dark energy: dark matter contributes gravitational structure, while dark energy is the name given to the still-unknown phenomenon associated with accelerated cosmic expansion.

The cosmic web forms as gravity amplifies concentrations of matter, producing filaments, walls, clusters, and intervening voids.
