Evolution and rearrangement of the internal magnetic field stresses the crust and magnetosphere. Crustal fractures or plastic motion can trigger rapid magnetic reconfiguration, releasing energy as X-rays and gamma rays. Strong fields also alter particle motion, atomic structure, and radiative transfer.
