The sequence below comes from this topic's published material. Sections expand or contract with the subject instead of forcing every lesson into the same five-step mold.
Structure
Structure of Galaxy Formation & Evolution
A modern galaxy includes stars, cold and hot gas, dust, a central black hole in many cases, and an extended dark-matter halo. These components exchange mass, energy, and angular momentum while the galaxy interacts with the circumgalactic and intergalactic environments.
Chapter review
Assessment still in review.
The chapter is published, but its assessment has not completed the verification and QA pipeline yet. It will appear here after publication.

Dark-matter overdensities collapse first and provide gravitational wells.
supported · checked Sep 22, 2026Galaxies formed as small density fluctuations in the early universe grew through gravity, collected gas inside dark-matter halos, formed stars, and merged into larger structures.
supported · checked Sep 22, 2026Deep observations show that distant young galaxies are generally smaller, more irregular, and more actively star-forming than present-day massive systems.
