Mechanism
Mechanism of How Gravitational Waves Are Produced
Accelerating masses produce time-varying spacetime curvature. Because mass and momentum conservation forbid ordinary gravitational dipole radiation in general relativity, quadrupolar asymmetry is the leading channel. Binary systems lose orbital energy and angular momentum to waves and therefore inspiral.
