Overview
Advanced view of Resonances, N-Body Dynamics & Gravity Assists
Real planetary systems contain many mutually gravitating bodies, so their motions depart from ideal two-body ellipses. Resonances organize repeated gravitational interactions, N-body dynamics tracks the coupled evolution of all masses, and gravity assists deliberately use a moving planet to exchange energy and momentum with a spacecraft relative to the Sun.
N-body dynamics predicts long-term planetary stability, resonant migration, asteroid hazards, spacecraft trajectories, and the evolution of exoplanet systems. Gravity assists reduce propulsion requirements by exploiting planetary orbital energy rather than creating energy from nothing.
