Mechanism
Dynamics of Resonances, N-Body Dynamics & Gravity Assists
Repeated gravitational kicks at similar orbital phases can add coherently in a resonance. In an N-body system, every mass perturbs every other mass, so numerical integration is often required. During a gravity assist, a spacecraft changes direction in the planet's frame; because the planet itself moves around the Sun, the spacecraft can gain or lose heliocentric energy while the planet changes by an imperceptibly tiny opposite amount.
