Overview
Advanced view of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts are brief, extraordinarily luminous flashes of gamma rays from cosmological distances. Long-duration bursts are associated mainly with the collapse of some massive stars, while short-duration bursts are strongly linked to compact-object mergers such as neutron-star binaries.
GRBs probe compact-object formation, relativistic jets, early galaxies, nucleosynthesis, and multi-messenger astrophysics.

Fermi and other satellites localize bursts; redshifts place them at cosmological distances; long bursts coincide with broad-lined Type Ic supernovae; GW170817 linked a short gamma-ray burst with a neutron-star merger.
