Addition Word Problems Within 20
Identify join, add-to, and part-part-whole addition situations within 20.
Learning objectives
What you should be able to do
- Identify join, add-to, and part-part-whole addition situations within 20.
- Represent word problems with drawings, equations, and labeled answers.
- Distinguish known quantities from the unknown total or part.
Prerequisite check
Make sure the foundation is ready.
Checks computation readiness.
Checks contextual operation meaning.
Learn
Build the idea from meaning, not memorization.
Read for quantity relationships, not keywords alone
Words such as 'more' can appear in different situations. First identify what is known, what changes or combines, and what the question asks.
Join and add-to problems both use addition
Join problems combine separate groups; add-to problems start with one quantity that increases. Both can be represented with addition when the unknown is the resulting total.
Part-part-whole problems combine categories
If there are 8 red and 6 blue markers, the parts are 8 and 6 and the whole is 14 markers. No action needs to occur for addition to describe the whole.
A complete answer includes units and reasoning
Write an equation, solve it, and say what the number means: '14 markers altogether.'
Interactive math lab
Change it. See what stays true.
Equation Balance
Adjust both sides. Equality means both expressions have the same value.
Balanced: both sides have equal value.
- identify knowns
- build bar model
- choose equation
- label answer
Worked examples
Twenty different ways to see the concept work.
6 birds sit; 4 more land.
6+4=10 birdsAdd-to situation.
8 red and 5 blue blocks.
8+5=13 blocksPart-part-whole.
9 stickers, then 3 more earned.
9+3=12 stickersQuantity increases.
7 cats and 6 dogs.
7+6=13 animalsCombine categories.
5 books plus 8 new books.
5+8=13 booksJoin quantities.
10 children and 4 more arrive.
10+4=14 childrenAdd-to.
4 green and 9 yellow counters.
4+9=13 countersTwo parts make one whole.
11 pencils and 3 pens. Total writing tools?
11+3=14Both categories belong to requested whole.
12 cars, 2 more arrive.
12+2=14 carsCount on two.
6 apples and 6 oranges.
6+6=12 fruitDouble fact.
8 points in round one and 7 in round two.
8+7=15 pointsCombine scores.
9 balloons and 9 more.
9+9=18 balloonsDouble nine.
13 students, 4 join.
13+4=17 studentsAdd-to within 20.
2 red, 8 blue, total?
2+8=10Combine parts.
Which equation matches 7 ducks plus 5 more?
7+5=12Unknown is new total.
What does 12 mean in 7+5=12 ducks?
12 ducks after joiningInterpret in context.
A problem gives parts 6 and 9, asks whole.
6+9=15Whole is unknown.
A story starts at 8 and increases by 4.
8+4=12Add-to structure.
Explain why 'altogether' often signals a whole question.
It asks for combined totalBut structure, not a keyword alone, confirms addition.
Create a diagram for 9+6.
Two labeled groups joining to 15Visual model matches equation.
Practice
Guided practice with hints
017 birds, 4 more land.
Hint: Identify start and added amount.
Answer: 11 birds
028 red, 3 blue blocks.
Hint: Treat colors as parts of one whole.
Answer: 11 blocks
03Write equation for 9 points plus 6 points.
Hint: Add the two scores.
Answer: 9+6=15
04What unit belongs on answer?
Hint: Use the noun in the question.
Answer: Points, blocks, birds, etc.
05Does every problem with word 'more' automatically mean addition?
Hint: Check the relationship.
Answer: No; read the full structure.
06Draw a model for 6+5.
Hint: Show two parts and a whole.
Answer: Any accurate representation.
Practice
Independent practice
018 birds + 7 more
Answer: 15 birds
029 red + 4 blue blocks
Answer: 13 blocks
0311 points + 5 points
Answer: 16 points
046 cats + 8 dogs
Answer: 14 animals
0512 books + 3 books
Answer: 15 books
067+9 story total
Answer: 16
07What should a final answer include?
Answer: The number and its unit/context.
08What is the unknown in a total problem?
Answer: The combined whole.
Common mistakes
Learn to catch the error, not just the answer.
Identify start, change, parts, whole, and unknown first.
State what the number counts.
Check whether each quantity is part of the category being asked about.
Applications & challenge
Use the idea beyond a single exercise.
Applications
- Model classroom counts combining two categories.
- Combine points, objects, or participants across two groups or events.
Challenge problems
Write a join problem for 8+6.
Any valid story combining groups of 8 and 6 to make 14.
Write an add-to problem for 11+4.
Any valid story starting at 11 and increasing by 4 to 15.
Why can 8 red + 6 blue be addition without an action word?
The problem asks for the whole made from two parts.
How can a diagram reveal the operation?
It shows whether quantities combine into a whole or separate from one.

018 birds + 5 more
Answer: 13 birds
027 red + 6 blue counters
Answer: 13 counters
0312 children + 4 join
Answer: 16 children
04What is a part-part-whole problem?
Answer: A problem where known parts combine into a whole.
05Why not rely only on keywords?
Answer: The same words can appear in different structures.
06What does the sum represent?
Answer: The combined or increased total.
07What should an equation match?
Answer: The quantities and relationship in the story.
08Why include units?
Answer: They explain what the numerical answer means.
