Create Picture Graphs
Organize categorical data in a picture graph.
Learning objectives
What you should be able to do
- Organize categorical data in a picture graph.
- Use a key to interpret each picture's value.
- Create labels, categories, and scales that accurately represent data.
Prerequisite check
Make sure the foundation is ready.
Checks Grade1 graph interpretation.
Learn
Build the idea from meaning, not memorization.
Picture graphs represent category counts visually
A picture graph assigns symbols or images to categories. The number of symbols encodes how many observations belong to each category.
The key defines symbol value
If one star represents2 votes, three stars represent6 votes. Ignoring the key can double or halve the interpreted data.
Every graph needs labels
A useful graph names the topic, categories, and symbol value. Without labels, viewers cannot tell what the quantities mean.
Data must match the source count
Creating a graph is a translation task. Each category's visual representation should encode exactly the recorded data.
Interactive math lab
Change it. See what stays true.
Ten-Frame Lab
Fill the frame from left to right and connect the visible amount to the numeral.
5 filled; 5 empty; 10 spaces altogether.
- enter category counts
- choose key
- place icons
- validate against table
Worked examples
Twenty different ways to see the concept work.
Cats4; one icon=1.
4 cat iconsDirect count.
Dogs3; one icon=1.
3 iconsDirect count.
Apples6; one icon=2.
3 icons3×2=6.
Bananas8; one icon=2.
4 icons4×2=8.
Books10; one icon=5.
2 icons2×5=10.
3 stars key2 each.
6Use key.
5 circles key1.
5Each one.
2 symbols key5.
10Scale factor.
Why key required?
Defines each symbol's valueOtherwise count ambiguous.
Category with0.
show no icons but keep labelZero is data.
Cats4,dogs2. More cats?
2 moreRead counts.
Choose key2 for even counts.
efficientFewer symbols.
Can one icon represent3?
Yes if key says soKey defines scale.
Graph title purpose.
Describes datasetContext.
Category labels purpose.
Identify groupsMeaning.
Recorded6 but graph shows5 icons key1.
incorrectVisual count mismatches.
Recorded6 graph3 icons key2.
correct3×2=6.
Half icon with key2 could mean?
1If convention explained.
Why avoid decorative unlabeled pictures?
They may not encode data clearlyGraph must communicate.
Translate table A4,B6 to key2.
A2 icons,B3 iconsEach icon=2.
Practice
Guided practice with hints
01Data red6,blue4,key2.
Hint: Divide counts by2.
Answer: 3 red icons,2 blue
02Key5,3 icons.
Hint: Multiply.
Answer: 15
03Zero votes graph?
Hint: Keep category label.
Answer: 0 icons
04Why title?
Hint: Identify what graph shows.
Answer: Context

05Need key?
Answer: Yes
06Need category labels?
Answer: Yes
07Zero category display
Answer: Label with no icons/0
08Purpose picture graph
Answer: Visualize categorical counts.
Common mistakes
Learn to catch the error, not just the answer.
Multiply number of icons by key value.
Keep category label to preserve dataset.
Apply one clearly stated key consistently.
Applications & challenge
Use the idea beyond a single exercise.
Applications
- Graph class preferences or inventory categories.
- Turn survey tally data into a visual summary.
Challenge problems
Data12,18 with key3. Icons?
4 and6
Why choose larger key?
Reduce clutter for larger counts.
Can same data look different with different keys?
Yes, if decoded values remain identical.
What makes graph trustworthy?
Accurate mapping, clear labels, consistent key.
