Fraction names describe equal share count
Two equal shares are halves, three equal shares are thirds, and four equal shares are fourths. Equality is required in every case.
The whole is the reference
A share name describes a relationship to its whole. One third of one rectangle need not have the same physical size as one third of a larger rectangle.
Different partitions can be valid
A rectangle can be divided into thirds using three equal strips or another equal-area design. The regions need equal area, not identical orientation.
More equal shares create smaller pieces for the same whole
For a fixed whole, fourths are smaller than thirds, and thirds are smaller than halves.
