Choose an Efficient Strategy and Justify It
Choose efficient strategies for Grade2 calculations and problems.
Learning objectives
What you should be able to do
- Choose efficient strategies for Grade2 calculations and problems.
- Compare multiple valid strategies for the same problem.
- Justify strategy choice using number structure and problem context.
Prerequisite check
Make sure the foundation is ready.
Checks strategy repertoire and reflective reasoning.
Learn
Build the idea from meaning, not memorization.
Efficient does not always mean fastest
An efficient strategy reduces unnecessary work, fits the numbers, and remains understandable and reliable. Different learners may choose different valid methods.
Number structure should guide strategy
For99+36, adding100 then subtracting1 is efficient. For48+52, making100 directly is natural. For600−200, place-value subtraction is simpler than a detailed algorithm.
Context can influence method
A number line may be ideal for length difference, coins for money, and base-ten blocks for regrouping. Strategy includes choosing representations, not just arithmetic procedures.
Justification connects method to mathematics
Saying 'I like it' is not mathematical justification. Explain why the strategy preserves value or exploits a useful relationship.
Interactive math lab
Change it. See what stays true.
Equation Balance
Adjust both sides. Equality means both expressions have the same value.
Balanced: both sides have equal value.
- choose strategy
- compare methods
- justify choice
- spot inefficient path

08Justification needs
Answer: Mathematical reason method works/fits.
Common mistakes
Learn to catch the error, not just the answer.
Match strategy to numbers and context.
Efficiency includes accuracy and clarity.
Explain the structural feature that makes it effective.
Applications & challenge
Use the idea beyond a single exercise.
Applications
- Choose mental versus written methods in shopping/measurement.
- Explain strategy choices to peers.
Challenge problems
Best for999+46?
1000+46−1=1045 (compensation).
Why base-ten model useful for subtraction across zero?
Makes multi-place trades visible.
Could slower strategy be better?
Yes, if more reliable/clear for learner/context.
Compare two methods for38+27.
Standard regroup or40+25; both65, compensation may be fewer mental steps.
