Add like units
Tens represent groups of ten and ones represent individual units. In 34+25, combine 3 tens with 2 tens and 4 ones with 5 ones.
No regrouping is needed when ones stay below ten
If the ones sum is 9 or less, it remains in the ones place. For 34+25, 4+5=9 and 30+20=50, so the total is 59.
Expanded form reveals the structure
34+25=(30+4)+(20+5)=(30+20)+(4+5)=50+9=59. The standard algorithm is a compact version of this place-value reasoning.
Estimate to check size
34+25 should be near 30+20=50 and a bit larger. A result like 509 is immediately unreasonable.
