Subtract Two-Digit Numbers Without Regrouping
Subtract two-digit numbers when each top-place digit is large enough without regrouping.
Learning objectives
What you should be able to do
- Subtract two-digit numbers when each top-place digit is large enough without regrouping.
- Use place-value decomposition and base-ten models.
- Explain why tens subtract from tens and ones from ones.
Prerequisite check
Make sure the foundation is ready.
Checks place-value and fact fluency needed for two-digit subtraction.
Learn
Build the idea from meaning, not memorization.
Subtract like units
In 68−24, remove 2 tens from 6 tens and 4 ones from 8 ones. This works directly because each place has enough units to subtract without trading.
Expanded form shows why the method works
68−24=(60+8)−(20+4)=(60−20)+(8−4)=40+4=44. The vertical method is a compact record of this place-value reasoning.
No regrouping means no place needs extra units
If the ones digit on top is at least as large as the ones digit being removed, and the tens also work directly, subtraction can be completed place by place.
Estimate to check the difference
68−24 is near 70−20=50, so 44 is reasonable. A result larger than 68 would not fit a take-away interpretation.

Common mistakes
Learn to catch the error, not just the answer.
Keep the subtraction order fixed: top number minus bottom number.
Align digits and subtract like units.
Use magnitude reasoning to check whether the result makes sense.
Applications & challenge
Use the idea beyond a single exercise.
Applications
- Find how many items remain after removing grouped tens and ones.
- Compare two two-digit quantities by subtraction.
Challenge problems
Create a subtraction with difference 42 and no regrouping.
Example 64−22.
Why is 68−24 not 64?
Because both tens and ones must be subtracted: 60−20 and8−4.
Show 75−24 using base-ten blocks.
Remove2 tens and4 ones from7 tens5 ones, leaving5 tens1 one.
Explain how estimation checks 93−41.
90−40≈50, so52 is reasonable.
