A math story describes quantities changing
In an addition story, a starting group may be joined by another group or increased by new objects. The important question is what the numbers mean in the situation, not just which operation symbol appears.
Act out the story before writing the equation
If there are 4 birds and 2 more land, build four counters, add two counters, and count the new total. Then record 4 + 2 = 6. The model gives meaning to the equation.
The sum answers a specific question
The answer 6 is not just a number. In the bird story, it means six birds are present after two more arrive. A complete explanation should connect the number back to the story.
Choose a strategy that matches the quantities
For small groups, count all objects. If the starting quantity is already known, count on. A ten-frame can organize quantities near ten and make the total easier to see.
