Type Ia supernovae can be standardized as distance indicators because their light-curve shape and color correlate with intrinsic luminosity. In the late 1990s, distant Type Ia supernovae appeared systematically dimmer than expected in a decelerating universe, providing the first strong evidence that cosmic expansion is accelerating.
