Overview
What Orbital Energy, Velocity & Escape Speed means
Orbital motion is governed by the exchange between kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy. Bound orbits have negative total mechanical energy in the usual zero-at-infinity convention, while escape occurs when total energy reaches zero or becomes positive and the trajectory no longer returns.
