Read and Write Numbers to 120
Read and write numerals through 120.
Learning objectives
What you should be able to do
- Read and write numerals through 120.
- Connect spoken number names, standard numerals, and tens-and-ones representations.
- Avoid common reversals and naming errors around teen numbers, decades, and 100.
Prerequisite check
Make sure the foundation is ready.
Checks sequence familiarity.
Checks numeral structure.
Learn
Build the idea from meaning, not memorization.
Numbers have spoken and written forms
The quantity forty-two can be spoken as 'forty-two,' written as 42, and represented as four tens and two ones. These forms carry the same value.
Decade names connect to tens
Twenty is two tens, thirty is three tens, forty is four tens, and so on. Adding ones after the decade name creates numbers such as 34 and 68.
Teen numbers require careful language
Thirteen and thirty sound similar but represent different place values. Use the model: 13 is one ten and three ones, while 30 is three tens.
One hundred begins a three-digit representation
100 represents one hundred. Numbers 101–120 add ones and then a new ten beyond one hundred, such as 114 = one hundred fourteen.

Why does 09 usually write as 9 in standard whole-number notation?
Leading zero adds no place valueNine is simply 9.
Explain how 101 differs from 110.
101=100+1; 110=100+10The positions of 1 and 0 change value.

Common mistakes
Learn to catch the error, not just the answer.
Identify tens first, then ones.
Check the number of tens in a place-value model.
The tens place must be represented even when it contains zero tens.
Applications & challenge
Use the idea beyond a single exercise.
Applications
- Read numbered pages, classroom labels, or chart positions up to 120.
- Translate spoken counts into written numerals when recording data.
Challenge problems
Explain difference between 16 and 60.
16 is 1 ten 6 ones; 60 is 6 tens.
Why does 105 need a zero in the tens place?
It shows there are zero tens between the hundred and five ones.
Write 100+10+9.
119
