Partition Rectangles into Rows and Columns
Partition rectangles into equal-size squares arranged in rows and columns.
Learning objectives
What you should be able to do
- Partition rectangles into equal-size squares arranged in rows and columns.
- Count total squares with repeated addition.
- Connect array structure to equal groups and area foundations.
Prerequisite check
Make sure the foundation is ready.
Checks array and geometry foundations.
Learn
Build the idea from meaning, not memorization.
Rows and columns organize equal square regions
A rectangle can be partitioned into equal-size squares arranged in horizontal rows and vertical columns. This creates a geometric array.
Equal rows support repeated addition
If a rectangle has3 rows with4 squares in each row, total squares are4+4+4=12.
Rows and columns describe same total from different directions
A3-row,4-column rectangle has12 squares. It can also be viewed as4 columns of3, showing the commutative structure later formalized in multiplication.
No gaps or overlaps
A true partition covers the rectangle completely with non-overlapping equal regions.

Common mistakes
Learn to catch the error, not just the answer.
Count cells/regions, not boundary lines.
Partition into equal-size square units.
Rotation changes orientation, not number of cells.
Applications & challenge
Use the idea beyond a single exercise.
Applications
- Tile a rectangular floor/model.
- Connect seating arrays to rectangular grids.
Challenge problems

Why3x4 and4x3 same total?
They use same12 equal units rearranged.
How does grid prepare for area?
Area measures how many square units cover a region.
