Proof of Stake

A proof-of-stake network requires validators to lock economic value and uses that stake in block proposal, voting, or finality rules. Ethereum selects proposers and committees from registered validators, while validators attest to the chain view they consider correct.

The security idea is that conflicting behavior can be attributable to signed messages and punished economically, while finality requires supermajority support.

A proposer creates a block for a slot. Other validators issue attestations that vote on the chain head and checkpoint information. Fork-choice logic uses those messages to identify the preferred branch. A finality mechanism uses supermajority support to justify and finalize checkpoints.

One validator's proposed block is therefore not final merely because it exists.

Validators place stake at risk before participating. If a validator is offline, it can miss rewards and incur penalties. If it signs specified conflicting messages, the evidence can be included on-chain and the validator can be slashed. The system therefore makes some attacks provably punishable.

Economic penalties are only one layer; software, networking, key security, and stake distribution also matter.

Proof of stake replaces external computational work with protocol-controlled economic collateral as the scarce resource behind consensus participation. Validators bond stake and are selected or weighted according to protocol rules. They may propose blocks, attest to blocks proposed by others, and participate in checkpoint or finality votes. The exact workflow differs by chain, so “staking” should never be treated as one universal algorithm.

The bonded asset changes incentives because specified forms of provably conflicting behavior can be punished. In Ethereum, for example, certain contradictory attestations or proposals can trigger slashing, while ordinary downtime can reduce rewards without being equivalent to malicious behavior. This distinction matters: penalties are designed around different failure modes.

Proof of stake also changes attack economics. An adversary needs control over a large quantity of the consensus resource rather than a comparable share of hash power. Yet stake concentration, validator infrastructure concentration, key security, governance, and correlated software failures remain important. PoS does not eliminate the need for networking or fork choice; validators still operate in a distributed system where messages arrive at different times.

The best mental model is therefore “economically weighted voting plus protocol-specific selection and finality rules,” not “people earn interest for locking coins.”
